The Challenge with ADHD Therapy: Bridging the Gap Between Intentions and Results
So, you’ve discovered that you have ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)? Whether you’ve known for years or have just been diagnosed, you’re in the right place.
Living with ADHD can often feel overwhelming, but you're likely familiar with that already—that’s why you’re here. From distractibility and low motivation to feeling crushed by everyday tasks, therapy can offer the structure, support, and tools you need to manage your symptoms and thrive.
As a therapist with ADHD and a specialization in ADHD treatment, I offer personalized, compassionate therapy designed to help you understand your ADHD brain and behaviors, develop coping strategies, and build confidence in navigating life on your own terms. You don’t have to go it alone—let's work together to chart a path forward that fits your needs.
Get the right Support for your ADHD brain
ADHD affects every part of life—from your career or education to relationships, self-esteem, and self-perception. As a neurodevelopmental disorder, ADHD has been with you since before you were born and will remain throughout your life. The good news? Therapy can provide relief by helping you:
Understand your ADHD symptoms in various contexts
Develop a greater sense of control and autonomy
Learn about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) and emotional dysregulation
Develop emotional and attentional regulation through coping strategies
Improve focus, time management, and productivity
Navigate anxiety and overwhelm
Build strong, supportive relationships and communication skills
By tailoring therapy to meet your specific needs, we can help you gain the clarity, skills, and confidence to face life's challenges with ADHD head-on. Don’t try harder, try smarter!
Common Features of my Therapy approach for ADHD
Psychoeducation about ADHD:
Connecting your symptoms and experiences to ADHD to better address concerns
Offering information about ADHD medication and self-advocacy
Explaining why typical ADHD therapy often falls short
Autonomy building:
Challenging harmful self-beliefs—many people with ADHD believe they’re “wrong” for thinking or acting a certain way. I work to dismantle this belief from our first session onward. ADHD brains face challenges, but so do all brains.
Replacing neurotypical ideals with the understanding that your brain works differently, but not poorly.
Providing opportunities for you to direct therapy and express your needs openly. Adaptive communication is key to effective therapy.
Developing emotional and attentional Regulation:
Gaining awareness of attentional states that emerge during boredom or interest (including hyper-focus)
Using creative problem-solving and self-awareness to manage overwhelm
Learning to identify RSD and reinterpret possible criticism through a different lens
If any of this resonates with you and sounds helpful, starting therapy with me can assist in these areas—and more. However, if there’s something important to you that I haven’t mentioned, feel free to reach out and discuss your unique concerns.
Why Choose Me as Your ADHD Therapist?
Traditional ADHD therapy often involves advice and tools that, at best, work inconsistently. While challenges are inevitable, I strive to minimize them by incorporating:
Expertise & Experience:
With over 2 years of experience in ADHD therapy (and a lifetime of experience with ADHD), I specialize in helping people understand and manage their symptoms. My approach is informed by both clinical expertise and lived experience.
A Safe, Nonjudgmental Space:
You deserve a space where you can feel heard, understood, and supported. I create an environment that fosters comfort, where you can discuss struggles and work toward meaningful change.
A Collaborative Partnership:
Therapy is a partnership. We’ll work together to find tools and strategies that best fit your life, setting you up for success on your terms.
My Approach
Eclectic Approach: Tailored to your needs, drawing from various therapy modalities (CBT, DBT, person-centered, mindfulness, etc.).
Inclusivity Prioritized: many people with ADHD are LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, AAPI, disabled, or belong to other minority groups. I am knowledgeable about sexism, racism, ableism, power-imbalances, inequalities and inequities, and I am always eager to learn more! Therapy is most effective when you are free to show up as your authentic self.
Research-Based Expertise: Informed by the latest ADHD research and years of experience diagnosing and supporting neurodivergent individuals.

Here are two that I have found helpful!
-
Dr. Megan Anna Neff has some of my favorite resources and insights about ADHD (and Autism!). Whether you check out her blogs, Venn diagrams, or listen to her and Patrick Casale’s Divergent Conversations podcast, this website is chock-full of extremely helpful content!

One of my favorite content creators in the ADHD space is Jessica McCabe, creator of How To ADHD over on YouTube and she has a book by the same name. Many books written on ADHD can be bogged down with overly clinical language and points of applicable that are very neurotypical. But Jessica’s book and channel are incredibly useful and encouraging.
